The Spring Branch Independent School District is a school district headquartered in Hedwig Village, Texas, United States in Greater Houston. This district serves the western part of Houston, including most of the Spring Branch. It also serves several small towns known as the Memorial Village in its jurisdiction, such as Hedwig Village and Spring Valley Village. Most of the districts are located within the city limits of Houston.

School district boundaries include Hempstead Road to the northeast (formerly US 290), Interstate 610 to the east, Clay Road to the north, the Addicks Dam to the west, and Buffalo Bayou to the south. The Spring Branch serves 35,000 kindergarten to 12th grade students and covers an area of 188,000 residents.

The ISD Spring Branch area is served by the Houston Community College System, but not on a tax basis.

SBISD is not to be confused with the Spring Independent School District, also located in the Greater Houston area (the latter located in the northern part of the region).

There are currently four traditional secondary schools (grades 9-12), one of which is 6A, and three high schools 5A, eight secondary schools (grades 6-8), and twenty-six primary schools (K-5 class), and six Pre-K early education center in the district. Three higher secondary school centers serve students in grades 9-12 with a variety of purposes, including one public charter school.

Histori

The school district comes from the Spring Branch School Society, sponsored by St. Peter's Church in 1856. The first school opened in 1889. In 1905, the white school had one teacher with 49 students and a black school had one teacher with 29 students.

The area did not become urban until the expansion of the city limits of Houston in the 1950s, followed by failed attempts by the entire Spring Branch region to incorporate into one entity, leading to the establishment of Memorial Village. Schools are separated.

In 1979, The New York Times said that the district was "highly respected".

Hal Guthrie became supervisor in 1986 and retired in 2001. During Guthrie's reign, the entry of low-income and Hispanic students entered the district. In 2001, SBISD established free preschool for all students at all income levels. Melanie Markley of the Houston Chronicle wrote that Guthrie "not only guides the district back to health, but this year's retirement ends a career that many say has earned Spring Branch's reputation as a pioneer."

In 2009, SBISD started a partnership with Houston Community College Northwest, enabling students to take college credits. Each student can earn up to 30 credits when enrolling in SBISD school.
