Lincoln University and Harris-Stowe State University were founded in the mid-nineteenth century and are historically black colleges and universities.</p><p>Among private institutions Washington University in St. Louis and Saint Louis University are the top two schools in the US. There are many junior colleges, trade schools, church universities and other private universities in the state. IN. Still University is the first osteopathic medical school in the world. Hannibal-LaGrange University in Hannibal, Missouri, was one of the first colleges to the west of Mississippi (founded 1858 in LaGrange, Missouri, and moved to Hannibal in 1928).</p><p>The state funded a $ 2,000 scholarship, based on a new achievement, Bright Flight, awarded to the top three percent of Missouri high school graduates attending state universities.</p><p>The 19th century border war between Missouri and Kansas continues as a sports competition between the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas. The latter is the oldest symphony orchestra of both countries and achieved excellence in recent years under the conductors of Leonard Slatkin.
