Peripheral edema is edema (accumulation of fluid that causes swelling) in tissues perfused by the peripheral vascular system, usually in the lower limbs. In the most dependent part of the body (which depends on the distal), it can be called dependent edema.
This condition is commonly associated with aging, but can be caused by many other conditions, including congestive heart failure, Kidney Failure, Liver Cirrhosis, Portal Hypertension, trauma, alcoholism, altitude sickness, pregnancy, hypertension, sickle cell anemia, impaired lymphatic system, or a long time sitting or standing without moving. Some medications (eg amlodipine, pregabalin) can also cause or worsen the condition.

Prognosis
The success of treatment depends on the underlying cause control. Severe swelling can cause permanent damage to the nerves, leading to peripheral neuropathy. Many cases of temporary or minor causes are lost by themselves, without lasting damage.
