In Mexico there are three main types of public holidays:
- Holiday required : National holidays. Employees are entitled to a day off with regular payments and schools (public and private) are closed.
- National holidays : This holiday is nationally observed, but employees are not eligible for a paid holiday.
- Celebration : This is a traditional holiday to honor religious events, such as Carnival, Holy Week, Easter, etc. or general celebrations, such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, etc.
dia de la Independencia or Aniversario de la Independencia , 16 September, commemorates the independence of Mexico from Spain and is the most important patriotic holiday. Parades are held and many schools are closed.

Legitimate holidays (referred to as "feriados " or " dÃÆ'as de asueto " in Mexico) are established through the federal government and governed by the Federal Legal Labor ( Ley Federal del Trabajo ). Most workers, public and private, are entitled to take days off with regular payments. However, some companies may require employees to work on such holidays, but employees must be paid:
- regular payouts for official holidays, and
- twice (known as "double timing") regular payouts for the time they were working that day.
When an official holiday falls on a Sunday, Monday is considered an official holiday; if an official holiday falls on a Saturday, Friday will be considered an official holiday.
In addition to these dates, election days established by federal and local election laws are also official holidays.
