Histori

To deliver the series via simulcast satellites in the US and Canada, Met has partnered with NCM Fathom, a division of National CineMedia. The series is broadcast in AMC Cinema, Cinemark, Cineplex Entertainment, Regal Entertainment Group, Goodrich, Kerasotes, Marcus, and Amusements National cinema as well as a series of independent venues such as art centers and college campuses. The goals include building a larger audience for Met and gathering passion for art at the local level.

The original idea to present the opera in this way came from the new general manager of Met, Peter Gelb at the end of 2006. Shows Met's performance in digital cinemas in line with Met's other expansion efforts such as radio broadcasts. on Sirius Radio, iPod downloads, live video streaming on the Met website, and free nighttime screenings at Times Square and at the Lincoln Center. The Met also sponsors free HD broadcasts to selected public schools in New York City.

The simulcasts allow more people to experience the excitement of offering high quality performance from Met. This audience includes current opera fans who can not go to New York City to see live performances and potential opera fans looking for an easy and affordable method to check new art forms.

Tom Galley, chief operating officer and tech officer of National CineMedia, explained the experience by saying:

The Metropolitan Opera series is a unique opportunity for people to experience world-class opera in their local communities, plus a cinema environment and affordable ticket prices make this event something that the whole family can enjoy. If you have never had the pleasure of attending live opera shows before, this is the perfect opportunity to see why this magical form of art has captured the imagination of audiences for generations.

In the US, this series has also been broadcasted on high-definition and regular TV as part of the Public Broadcasting Great Performance series. In addition, the selected show can now be viewed online.

International expansion

The first season included seven cinemas in Britain, two in Japan and one in Norway. After a successful launch, several other countries joined for the second season and 100 screens added, selling 20,000 additional tickets. These include cinemas in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

2008 saw the network expand further to include more screens in the countries mentioned above plus other countries such as Australia, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Argentina (Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata), and Poland, as well as the Puerto Rico region.

Reactions in the British press have been positive:

... opera, in fact, manage to find new audiences, worldwide. Get off at Ritzy, my local cinema in Brixton, London, I can, since December, to see live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York...

The author of Peter Conrad, praises the performance of Gelb:

Relays are the brainchild of the new Met General Manager, Peter Gelb, or one of his many brainchildren, part of a campaign to rejuven Met audiences in New York and to welcome what he calls 'the global opera community' into the fold. When I met Gelb in New York last week, I told him that I decided that seeing The Barber at Clapham (just south of central London) was actually better than being in the Met. "Oh no, that's bad," she moaned. â € Å"We have to do a very good job.

Production

In 2011, six employees of Metropolitan Opera work full time in Live in HD. About 40 people work on the technical aspects of each broadcast, by comparing logistics scales with Emmy or Academy Awards preshow coverage. Host RenÃÆ' Â © e Fleming gave up his services. No equal substitution of a major cast member for Live performances in HD is required until January 2010, possibly due to the attraction appeal for worldwide viewers and the opportunity to appear on the next DVD of the broadcast.

Audience

Video and radio broadcast revenues increased for Met from about $ 5 million in 2006, Live in HD first year, to $ 22 million in 2008, with Live in HD contributing most to growth. For the 2009/10 season, Met spent about $ 12 million in production and received about half of the $ 47 million box-office gross. After paying royalties to the cast and crew, Met earned a profit of $ 8 million. Met's Live revenue in HD for the 2012/13 season is $ 34.5 million.

According to a 2008 study commissioned by the American Opera, most Live in HD participants are "moderate and frequent opera goers". About one in five, however, had not attended live opera performances in the previous two years, with some completely new to the opera and attending because of curiosity about it. The majority admitted to enjoying live broadcasts and broadcasts, and more than half said they were "very likely" to attend opera shows at the Met when visiting New York. A British University of British Columbia thesis in 2011 found that " Live in HD is not currently able to turn off the local live opera audience... [but t] here there is no evidence that it generates more the presence of a direct opera or bringing a new audience to a local opera house ".

A report outlining the 2013-2014 Met's season economy:

Last season, 10 operas were transmitted via satellite to at least 2,000 cinemas in 66 countries, including more than 800 US cinemas. Box office reached $ 60 million worldwide (average ticket price was $ 23 last season), with theater owners split 50-50 sales with Met (insiders say more profitable splits for Met in North America) and Fathom [ticket sales online agency] take a small percentage as well.

Vladica and Davis have used the Q methodology to analyze audience reaction and entertainment value judgment in connection with this series, and related cultural events transmitted to the cinema.
