Histori

Rainbow Media

When Rainbow was formed in 1980, it initially included Bravo and SportsChannel New York. When SportsChannel expanded by adding other regional networks, it also became part of Rainbow (see SportsChannel America). When SportsChannel merged into Fox Sports Net, all these networks except SportsChannel NY (later Fox Sports New York) are gradually being sold. Fox Sports New York was later transferred to MSG Media and renamed MSG.

Rainbow originally started the Playboy Channel in 1982 as a joint venture with Playboy; Cablevision will then resell the shares to Playboy.

In 1988, Cablevision incorporated their cable network with NBC, giving NBC a 50% stake in Rainbow. Through a series of transactions, NBC's stock is finally reduced. In 2002, Cablevision sold its shares from Bravo to NBC and as part of the deal, NBC handed over a 20% share later in Rainbow.

Rainbow runs MSG Metro Channels which was launched in 1998, before folding it in late 2005.

The company also established the Orlando, Florida, WRBW station in 1994, which was eventually sold to Chris-Craft in 1998; it's affiliated with the dead UPN, which Chris-Craft owned half of that time. Chris-Craft then sells its stations, including WRBW, to Fox Television Stations, which currently operates WRBW as MyNetworkTV station.

In 2005, Cablevision considered spinning from its content subsidiary, Rainbow Media as a public company, and made their core cable business private, but withdrew the plan. In 2006, a new plan emerged to privatize all Cablevision, including Rainbow Media. In January 2007, with no word if privatization was to be passed, Liberty Media expressed interest in acquiring Rainbow Media from Cablevision.

Rainbow Media also previously had Fuse's music channel; the channel became part of MSG Media in 2010, because Madison Square Garden is also separated as a public company. Rainbow Media also has a Wedding Center that closes on the same day AMC Networks becomes a public company.

AMC Networks

On March 10, 2011, Cablevision, as approved by the board on December 16, 2010, announced that Rainbow Media would be separated as a public company, AMC Networks, later in 2011, and, as said in 2005, made their core private wire business. Former president of Rainbow Media, Josh Sapan serves as president and chief executive of AMC Networks who go public on July 1, 2011.

On May 4, 2012, Dish Network announced that it will no longer bring the family of AMC Networks cable channels after the expiration of the satellite provider's distribution agreement with the company at the end of June 2012, arguing that AMC Networks overcharged the retransmission fees from the service to the carrier they and the audience are low for the channel.

AMC Networks responded to Dish Network's announcement of pending channel delays due to a breach of 2008 contract agreement with Dish Network by a subsidiary of the former subsidiary of Voom HD Networks (under the company's previous Rainbow Media Holdings brand) (pending trial at the Supreme Court of New York) , where he sought more than $ 2.5 billion in damage to Dish Network for not properly terminating his contract of carriage; The high-definition Voom channel was performed on the provider from May 1, 2005 to May 12, 2008 when Dish erased ten of the fifteen Voom channels from the lineup and the remaining five channels the following day. Dish Network stated that the lawsuit was not related to the decision to remove AMC Networks channel and it terminated the train agreement on its own terms.

On May 20, 2012, Dish Network removed the Sundance Channel from its channel list. Two weeks later on June 4, 2012, Dish relocated AMC, WEtv, and IFC to higher channel positions with AMC divided into two separate standard definitions and high-definition channel feeds (AMC was moved from channel 130 to channel 9609 for SD feed and 9610 for HD feed, WEtv moved from channel 128 to channel 9608 and IFC moved from channel 393 to channel 9607); the former channel channel space is occupied by three channels each replaced with HDNet, Indieplex Style and MoviePlex channel multiplex. The move is believed to be in response to an advertisement that runs during the June 3 broadcast of the Mad Men episode that urged Dish Network customers to inform the company to keep all three AMC Networks channels on satellite providers, with Dish Network stating that channel positions which are relocated better reflect the channel rankings.

On July 1, 2012, Dish Network lowered AMC, WEtv, and IFC from line-up channels at once.

On July 12, 2012, AMC said in an e-mailed statement that it will flow through the Internet's inaugural season of Breaking Bad to Dish's customers. "Dish customers can register online from July 13 for the show, which will air on July 15. We want to give Dish customers an extra week to switch service providers so they can enjoy the rest of the season."

On October 21, 2012, AMC Networks announced a settlement has been reached between them, Cablevision and Dish where Dish was forced to pay up to $ 700 million in damages to Cablevision for damages from removing the Voom owned channel from the Dish lineup back in 2008, and in return, Dish signed a new agreement to bring back channels owned by AMC Networks on Dish's list with AMC back October 21 and the rest on November 1st.

From 2013 to 2015, the company acquires or joins the joint venture annually. In 2016, AMC Networks completed a partnership agreement with former BET founder, Robert L. Johnson ' s RLJ Company. Under the agreement, AMC will use programming and distribution support to benefit Acorn and UMC. In addition, the RLJ-AMC partnership will allow for greater investment in content from African-American creative, Johnson stressed. The agreement calls for AMC to provide RLJ with a $ 60 million loan on a seven-year and $ 5 million term over a one-year period. AMC has received a warrant to buy at least 20 million shares or equivalent to 50.1% of the company. The time frame for carrying out the warrants is open, says AMC.

On November 15, 2016, AMC acquired a minority stake in comedy video and film and television production company Funny or Die, with plans to integrate it with IFC.

On April 27, 2018, the company, as the owner of IFC, acquired a majority stake in the operator's comedy venue Levity Live.
