History

TMMC has been in operation since 1988. TMMC consists of three different factories - North, West and South, each building a different vehicle. Plants adhere to Toyota's manufacturing process known as the Toyota Production System or TPS. In the first year TMMC was opened, 153 vehicles were built. Currently, the three factories that make up TMMC have the ability to build more than 500,000 vehicles each year. That puts Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in the top five global Toyota manufacturing plants. TMMC employs more than 8,000 people.

The Cambridge plant opened in 1988, and has been expanded twice since then. This is Toyota's second car assembly plant in North America, after the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky factory in Georgetown, Kentucky which opened in 1987, and Toyota's first Toyota assembly plant. The Cambridge plant in its current configuration includes 3,000,000 square feet (280,000 m 2 ) in space at 1.62 square kilometers (400 acres) and the Woodstock plant covers 1,800,000 square feet (170,000 m < > 2 ) in space at 4.05 square kilometers (1,000 acres). The Woodstock factory opened in 2008, and is now in full production of the Toyota RAV4. The location was chosen because of its educated workforce, close to the Cambridge plant, and adjacent to the main transport corridor, Highway 401 and Highway 403.

TMMC is the first factory outside of Japan that produces Lexus brand vehicles. It is also the first Toyota factory in North America and the only automotive manufacturer in Canada that collects advanced hybrid vehicle technology (Lexus RX 450h) and electric (Toyota RAV4 EV).

On March 28, 2012, TMMC announced that CA $ 80 million will be invested in the Woodstock plant to increase production by 50,000 vehicles annually to a new total of 200,000 vehicles per year. This creates 400 new jobs in the factory. On July 24, 2012, Toyota also created 400 new jobs at the Cambridge plant to handle the increased production of the Lexus RX line at 2twoyears to 104,000 vehicles. In April 2015, Toyota announced it would move its Corolla production to a new plant in Mexico, and will expand the RAV4 production to the Cambridge plant after 2019.

Unionization attempts

CAW (now known as Unifor) has tried several times to set TMMC. TMMC Assistant General Manager and spokesman Greig Mordue stated "Our team members will decide whether the best guild reflects their interest... At this point in time, we do not think they have anything to gain from the union", and described the defeat of the CAW drive that says " Our team members have recognized that third parties are complications they do not need. " Nevertheless, CAW supported Mordue as a liberal candidate (which failed) in the 2006 federal election instead of supporting the NDP, Zoe Kunschner. Team members have mentioned poor health and safety conditions as the main reason to seek union representation. In August 2014, Unifor announced the withdrawal of applications with the Ontario Labor Relations Agency to become a bidding agent for Toyota employees, and canceled a vote to unite the Woodstock and Cambridge plants.
