History
The group was formed in Calgary, Alberta by Billy Cowsill on guitar and lead vocals, Tim Leacock on bass, Steve Pineo on guitar and vocals, and Ross Watson on drums. In the 1980s, Cowsill had taught Leacock to play bass. The early group, started in 1998, were Cowsill and Leacock, performing in local venues. Leacock, Pineo and Watson have all become members of The Burners, whose cassettes were released, Low Tech/High Torque, Cowsill was produced in 1988. Cowsill has returned to Calgary from Vancouver, after the breakup of The Blue Shadows on in 1996, initially for the purpose of overcoming addiction challenges, rather than continuing music.
The band is famous for having three powerful singer-songwriters as members. The band was initially viewed by its members as an occasional band and weekend, due to the fact that Cowsill has been enrolled at Mount Royal College as a full-time student in psychology. The band became very popular in Calgary and in western Canada and the United States, playing a mixture of country music, bluegrass, blues, rock and rockabilly. The band got regular weekend engagements at The Mecca Cafà © à © in Calgary and, in June 2001, recorded their gig for three nights. It was released by independent music label Calgary Indelible Music, owned by music promoter and manager Neil MacGonigill, such as Live Event Record (2001) and Live At The Mecca Cafà © à ©, Volume 2 (2005). Live Recording Event was considered, in 2004, as one of the most successful recording of Alberta roots in memory. The tape was produced by Nashville producer Miles Wilkinson, who previously worked with Anne Murray, Brian Ahern and The Band, using a Wilkinson mobile recording studio. The recording was funded by developer Calgary Abe Epp.
Cowsill's health has declined since the early 2000s, as he has emphysema, Cushing's syndrome and osteoporosis. Despite Cowsill's serious health challenges, Co-Dependents continued until late 2004, as allowed by Cowsill's health. The band's next performance, without Cowsill, is as Joe Defendants. The surviving band members performed at Cowsill's memorial in Calgary, following the death of Cowsill in 2006.
