Histori

Founded in 1868 by a group of provincial newspaper owners, PA provides a London-based news gathering and reporting service from across the UK.

The founders of the news agency sought to produce a more accurate and reliable alternative to monopoly services of telegraph companies. A committee appointed to make arrangements for the establishment of the organization said: "The Association's press is formed on the principle of cooperation and can not work for the benefit of the individual, or be exclusive in his character".

In January 1870, the agency moved from a temporary office to a new headquarters in the Wine Office Court, just outside Fleet Street. At 5 am on Saturday 5 February 1870, the first press telegram was transmitted.

The first PA Correspondent in 1874 and the first sports editor in 1883. The agency's first editor-in-chief was Arthur Cranfield, who was appointed in 1926.

In 1995, PA moved from Fleet Street to Vauxhall Bridge Road, allowing the company to rapidly expand its output mainly in the sports and new media divisions.

The Press Association launched the Ananova news site in 2000. Ananova was then sold to Orange, and in December 2013, the PA Group sold the MeteoGroup weather business, Europe's largest private-sector weather company, to General Atlantic's global growth investment firm.

In 2005, the company changed its name to PA Group to reflect the diverse and growing digital business activities.

In February 2015, PA announced the sale of its financial publishing division, including TelecomFinance and SatelliteFinance.

The complete history of the Press Association was written by Chris Moncrieff, CBE, former Political Editor of the Press Association in 2001 called "Living on a Deadline."
