The Independence Police Department serves the citizens of Independence, Missouri, a city of 117,213 inhabitants (as of July 1, 2011) located in Jackson County, Missouri, east of Kansas City. According to the department, its mission is "to protect the life, freedom of the individual and the property of everyone in the City of Independence, to develop and maintain positive relationships with community members, and to foster a positive working environment for police officers.

The Independence Police Department was formed on August 8, 1882, when the "Night Watch" procedure was revoked and a new law entitled "Police" was approved. The "Police" law allows for a maximum of five people to be assigned to two watches, for a fee of $ 1.30/shift.
