Plot

Benjamin Franklin Gates is an American historian, cryptologist, and treasure hunter. As a child, his grandfather John tells the story that Charles Carroll of Carrollton gave a secret to their ancestors in 1832 of a national treasure tale hidden in America by the Founding Fathers and Freemasons. The clue that leads to the treasure is the phrase "The secret lies in Charlotte". While Ben is convinced by the story, his skeptical father, Patrick, thinks it is nonsense.

Thirty years later, Ben led an expedition with Ian Howe, and his friend, Riley Poole, a computer expert, to find Charlotte , a ship lost in the Arctic, which holds the first clue to find a national treasure. They found a meerschaum pipe, which had clues implying that the next one was on the Declaration of Independence. When Ian suggested that they steal the Declaration of Independence, Ben opposed, causing a dispute that resulted in a massive fire triggered by gunpowder, and the group split into two. Ian and his men escape from the ship while Ben and Riley take shelter just before the ship explodes.

Ben and Riley return to Washington D.C. and report the potential for theft of the Declaration to the FBI and Dr. Abigail Chase of the National Archives, but both dismissed their claims. Ben decides to steal the document itself from the Archive preservation room during a gala event. Getting Abigail's fingerprints, Ben manages to get the Declaration but is seen by Ian's group as they step in to steal it. Ben tries to go through the gift shop but must buy the declaration when the clerk mistakes it for a souvenir copy; Not having cash in hand at the time, Ben paid him with a credit card. Abigail, suspecting something was wrong, chased Ben and retrieved the document. Ian kidnaps her, but Ben and Riley rescue Abigail, deceiving Ian by leaving a copy of the Declaration he bought. The FBI agent Sadusky started tracking Ben, using Ben's credit card information.

Unable to return home, the trio go to Patrick's house. Patrick tried to convince Ben that the treasure was a myth, but Ben refused this. The three then studied the Declaration and found an Ottendorf cipher written in invisible ink. The message refers to Silence Dogood's letters written by Benjamin Franklin. Patrick previously owned them but donated it to the Franklin Institute. Using a schoolboy to get the key words of the letter, Ben, Riley, and Abigail find a message pointing to the Independence Hall bell tower, where the Liberty Bell once stood, unfortunately Ian and his men questioned the schoolchild and chased the new lead. Ben discovers a hidden cache containing a pair of glasses with several colored lenses created by Benjamin Franklin, which when used to read the back of the Declaration reveals a clue that points to the Trinity Church symbol located on Wall Street and Broadway in New York City.

The group was chased by colleague Ian. Ben was arrested by the FBI, while Abigail and Riley lost the Declaration to Ian. However, Abigail convinces Ian to help them save Ben in exchange for his next clue. Ian agreed, arranging a meeting at the USS Intrepid where they helped Ben avoid the FBI.

Ian returns the Declaration and asks for further clues, but when Ben remains embarrassed, Ian reveals he has kidnapped Patrick as a hostage. They enter into Trinity Church where they find an underground passage but seem to lead to a dead end lit by a single lantern. Patrick claims it refers to the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, pointing Ian to Old North Church in Boston. Ian left Gates trapped in the room, heading for Boston. Patrick revealed that the clue was false, then entered the treasure chamber but apparently looted. After heart to heart between Ben and Patrick, they find a curve that matches the meerschaum pipe, opens a large space containing the treasure, then runs through the back door. Ben contacted Sadusky, in fact Freemason, handed over the Declaration and the location of the treasure in exchange for pardon. Ian was then arrested when Ben tipped the FBI.

Later, Ben and Abigail have started a relationship. Meanwhile, Riley is a bit annoyed that Ben refuses the 10% finder fee for the treasure but receives a much smaller amount, which still has significant wealth.

National Treasure 3

In 2008 director Jon Turteltaub said that the team of filmmakers will take time on another National Treasure sequel, but Disney has registered the domain for NationalTreasure3.com and NationalTreasure4.com. Although the second film ends with a question about page 47 of the President's secret book, the new film may or may not be a sequel about "Page 47." Turteltaub responded in a press interview that the idea was not set as the basis for National Treasure 3 .

In October 2013, Turteltaub confirmed to Collider that the studio, himself, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the actors all wanted to do a third movie: "We want to do a movie, Disney wants to do a movie We just have the damned.I will bet that in two I will say that we are in the middle of the road. This is not just writing a great historical mystery, but we have to write something that has nothing to do with anything we have done before. have the original sequel, it's as ridiculous as that.We really want to make sure that the third does not just feel like the first repetition of one, or one too many ".

In 2014 Collider talks with producer Jerry Bruckheimer on this issue, he insists director John Turteltaub will return but with a new team of writers. "Yes, we are working on another National Treasure," he said at the time. "We just had a Friday meeting with writers and directors, so hopefully it will come together." On March 4, 2016, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger responded to a question about the third movie, saying, "We have done two movies, and yes they are really good movies I know Jerry Bruckheimer who produced them has had a conversation with us studio a few times about it, and there are some developments along the way, but at the moment we have not turned on the green light as we say, a National Treasure 3 But I know there is time and a number resources spent on development. "

On May 25, 2016, Nicolas Cage confirmed the movie was still in the process of writing. On September 1, 2017, Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that the script was finished, but Disney was not satisfied with the story.
