The Jeep Gladiator , Jeep Pickup or J-series is a series of full-size pickup trucks based on the large Jeep SJ (Wagoneer) platform built and sold under many marques from 1962 to 1988. The Jeep Gladiator/Pickup design is noteworthy for keeping production for more than 26 years on a single-generation car platform. Gladiators are the basis of the first postwar US Army trucks designed to be civilian vehicles and tailored to military use. Many versions of the Jeep pickup are built in other markets, including Mexico by VehÃÆ'culos Automotores Mexicanos.

Gladiator 1962-1971

Introduced in 1962 for the 1963 model, the Gladiator is a conventional body on a pickup design that shares the basic skeleton architecture and the front end with the Jeep Wagoneer wagon cart.

The title is J200 (short wheelbase truck, until mid-1965); J2000; J300 (long wheelbase truck, until mid 1967); J3000; and J4000, the first model with a longer 131-inch (3,300 mm) wheelbase.

Gladiators are available in RWD and 4WD, with optional double rear wheels. A remarkable innovation is the independent front suspension available, not a solid front axle on 4 ton of Gladiator trucks half a ton. This is a simple IFS design with a central part of Dana 44, which proved troublesome, unsold, and the option was removed in 1965. Very few possibilities were produced with this option.

Gladiator Trucks available as: Cabin and Chasis; Demolition; Stake Bed; and camping mounted on the chassis with extended wheelbase. Bedside load options are Townside, Thriftside ("step-side"), and Stake Bed, with up to 8,600 pounds (3,901Ã, kg) G.V.W. and a payload capacity of nearly two tons.

A new overhead cam engine of the Jeep Tornado 230 engine in straight-six (3.8 L) yields 140 hp (104 kW, 142 PS) is standard. This is the first production overhead cam machine in light trucks or American SUVs and one of the first OHC machines offered by American manufacturers. Further innovations for four-wheel-drive pickup include an optional automatic transmission (first industry), as well as power brakes, power steering, and postwar Jeeps early power take-offs for a variety of accessories including snow plows and thrust plates.

In early 1963, Willys Motors changed its name to Kaiser Jeep Corporation.

During 1965 327 cuÃ, in (5.4Ã, L) AMC V8 engines became available. It produces 250 hp (186 kW, 253 PS) and 340 pound force-feet (461 N m) of torque at 2600 rpm. The standard Tornado engine was replaced with American Motor '232 at (3.8Ã, L) OHV inline six.

In 1967, all two-wheel drive versions (RWD), except for the J-100 panel shipments, were canceled due to poor sales.

For 1968, the Thriftside model was blazing while the new camper option was added for the J-3600. From 1968 to 1971, the Jeep pickup offers Buick 350 cuÃ, at (5,7Ã,L) 230Ã, hp (172Ã, kW; 233Ã, PS) Dauntless V8 as an optional engine.

American Motors Corporation (AMC) bought Kaiser Jeep operations in 1970 when Kaiser Industries decided to leave the car business. Jeep trucks move to all AMC machines to improve performance and standardize production and service. Buick engines are replaced by 360 cuÃ, at (5.9Ã, L) or 401 cuÃ, in (6.6Ã, L) AMC V8s.

In 1970, the Gladiator front grille was converted to the same design as the Jeep Wagoneer SUV. This is the first styling change of trucks since its introduction. The AMC badges are also added to the grille.

Jeep Truck 1971-1988

Gladiator's name was dropped after 1971, after which the line was known only as a Jeep pickup, or J-series. Pickup designated as model J2000 and J4000 (3000 series dropped in 1971) until 1973, then as model J10 and J20 from 1974 to 1988.

Machine:

From 1971 to 1972 Jeep pickup offers AMC 304Ã,  ° C at (5.0Ã, L) 210Ã, hp (157Ã, kW; 213Ã, PS) V8 as an optional engine.

The AMC 258 cuÃ, in (4.2Ã, L) I6 engine was introduced in 1972 and offered until 1988. The machine generates 112Ã, hp (84Ã, KW, 114Ã, PS) and 210Ã, lb? Ft (285Ã, N? M) torque.

AMC 360 cu in (5.9L) was offered in 1971 and up to 1988. Produced early versions of 175 hp (130 kW, 177 PS) and 245 tor torrels (332 N m). Then the 360s produced 195Ã, hp (145Ã, kW; 198Ã, PS) and 295 lb ft (400Ã, N? M) of torque.

The modeling was simplified for 1974, with J-2000 and J-4000, which pointed to the wheel base, exchanged for J-10 and J-20, designating load capacity. Bigger brakes are made standard and turning radius is reduced. The Quadra-Trac system is now available with all engines.

The AMC 401 cuÃ, in (6.6Ã, L) was offered from 1974 to 1978. This machine is known for its excellent toughness and power output. 401 produces torque of 225Ã, hp (168Ã, kW; 228Ã, PS) and 320Ã, lb? Ft (434Ã,M? M).

For 1977, the Jeep J-10 pickup included Dana's four-wheel drive system, a more powerful 25-liter (4.2L) six-cylinder engine, and a heavier axle tube, while the electric front disc brakes became standard equipment and large enough. Larger GWV capacity J-20 includes AMC's 360Ã, cuÃ, in (5.9Ã,L) V8 engine. The 401 cu in (6.6Ã, L) engine is optional, as well as full-time Quadra-Trac and automatic and manual transmissions.

1983 saw the new full-time four-wheel drive system, Selec-Trac, replacing the Quadra-Trac.

From 1981 to 1985, a rebodied version of the J-10 was built and sold as a Jeep CJ-10, featuring a CJ-like nose and cabin, and a redesigned rear bike, somewhat resembling a Land-Plow.

Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. The full-size Jeep Pickup is not just an aging model, but also competes directly with the wider Dodge truck. Chrysler stops the full-size Jeep truck, but continues to build a luxurious and highly profitable Grand Wagoneer, which shares the chassis with a large pickup.

After the purchase of Chrysler, the compact Jeep Comanche pickup (based on Jeep Cherokee platform (XJ)) received only minor changes and its production continued until 1992.

Military version

Military pickup versions of civil Jeep including the M715 and M725, were built from 1967 to 1969. They were built under contract for countries other than the United States. The idea is to reduce costs by starting from civilian trucks and sharing parts with normal production trucks to create a "Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle" (CUCV) for the military as a tactical vehicle of 5/4 tons.

Crop the package

From 1975, Jeep tried to make their pickup more "car-like" and appealing to consumers, starting with the Pioneer package, featuring more luxurious interiors, wood interiors and exterior trim, chrome front bumper, window mold and wheel cover, double horn, and other "car" features.

From 1976-1983 the "Honcho" trim package is offered on the J10 pickup. It consists of thick striping and decals, and is offered with additional factories such as Levi interior or roll bar. The content of the Honcho package varies from year to year, but "always includes the wide Cherokee look."

Honcho was one of a series of special sticker packages offered for J-Series trucks in the mid to late 1970s, which included the 1977-1979 Gold Eagle and the 1978 "10-4" version that offered the optional Citizens' Band radio along with the decals. Honcho Package is only available on sportsside (stepside) and short bed truck. Between 1980 and 1983, only 1,264 of the sports versions were produced.

The Decal packages are available for many Jeep vehicles in the 1970s, including packages for the Cherokee Jeep called Cherokee Chief. The Golden Eagle package is also available for CJ and Cherokee.

The 1980's Laredo package (1981 model) is perhaps the most luxurious, including leather bucket seats, leather steering wheel, chrome interior trim, and sophisticated Alpine sound system.

Jeep truck concept

Jeep has shown many pickup truck trucks, and officials at the car factory have "expressed interest in putting such vehicles into production."

small pickup truck 2003

The ready-made version of the Jeep Scrambler pickup was demonstrated in 2003 at the North American Dealers Association, but was withdrawn after several hours. According to Trend Motor , there may be "Jeep pickup truck production in the works".

2005 Jeep Gladiator

At the end of 2004 a new concept of Jeep Gladiator was introduced. Although not officially meant for sale, it was used as a "demonstration that the Jeep pickup was in the dark niche of the brain belief of DaimlerChrysler.

The Gladiator concept has an open air canvas roof, windshield folding, removable door, and has an expandable truck bed. Gladiator has a 2.8 liter, 4-cylinder, common-rail diesel-turbo diesel engine that produces 165-hp (123-kW; 167Ã, PS) and 295Ã, Â £ (400Ã, N? M) power. The truck has a 6-speed manual transmission. Ground clearance is 13.7 in (348 mm), with a break-over angle of 23.2 Â °, an angle of approach of 47.6 Â ° and a departure angle of 38.0 Â °. Front and rear tires are 34 inches (864 mm) and mounted on 18x8 inch wheels. Jeep Gladiator has a payload of 1,500 pounds (680 kg).

A "midgate" makes the Gladiator truck concept closer to a Chevrolet Avalanche clone, "rather than an attempt to revive its epithet grandeur."

2012 Jeep J12

In March, Jeep announced the disclosure of a new concept at Safari Easter Jeep in Moab, Utah. The J-12 is based on a modified Wrangler Unlimited chassis with an 18-inch (457 mm) extension frame that allows the use of a 6 foot (1.8 m) load bed. The arrangement resembles a classic 1960s Jeep Gladiator truck and features a 16 "inch-school" seamless steel wheel with 36-inch tires, and a full bench seat in the cabin.

2016 Jeep Crew Chief 715

At the Jeep Safari 2016 in Moab, Utah, Jeep revealed seven new concepts including a crew Chief 715 pickup with four doors and a 5ft cargo bed. The design was inspired by the Kaiser Jeep M715 military vehicle from the late 1960s based on the regular production of the civil pickup Jeep Gladiator. The Jeep Crew Chief concept rides 20-inch beadlock wheels, and 40-inch military tires, but is largely based on the Wrangler Unlimited that stretches to a 139-in wheelbase (3,531 mm).
