control variables (or scientific constants ) in scientific experiments are constant and unchanging experimental elements during investigation. The control variable greatly influenced the experimental results, and it was held constant during the experiment to test the relative relationship of the dependent and independent variables. The control variable itself is not of primary importance for the experiment.

Usage

Variables in experiments that are held constant to assess the relationship between two other variables, are control variables. The control variable is one element that does not change during the experiment, because its unchanging status allows the relationship between other variables tested to be better understood.

Basically, the control variable is what is kept the same throughout the experiment, and that's not the main concern in the experimental results. Any change in the control variable in an experiment will break the correlation of the dependent variable (DV) to the independent variable (IV), thus skewing the result.

Experimental example

In any system that exists in its natural state, many variables can be interdependent, with each affecting the other. The scientific experiment examines the relationship of the IV element-manipulated by experiment-to the DV-element that is influenced by IV manipulation. Any additional independent variables can be a control variable.

P is the pressure
V is the volume
T is the temperature measured in kelvin

In the experimental verification of one part of the joint gas law, Boyle's law, ( P * V = < i> T ), where P ressure, T emperature, and V olume are variables, to test the resulting change to one of these variables requires at least one to remain constant. This is to see comparable experimental results in the remaining variables.

If the Volume is created as a control variable and is not allowed to change during the experiment, the relationship between the dependent variable, Pressure and Temperature, can be quickly determined by changing the value for one or the other. For example, if Pressure is raised then Temperature should increase.

However, if Temperature is a control variable and is not allowed to change throughout the course of the experiment, the relationship between the dependent variable, Pressure and Volume, can be quickly set by changing the value for one or the other. For example, Pressure is raised then Volume should decrease.
