ChromaFlair is the pigment used in paint systems, especially for cars. When the paint is applied, the color changes depending on the light source and the viewing angle. It was made in JDS Uniphase and used by DuPont and PPG.

Effect
The effect is achieved by interrupting the reflection and refraction of light from the surface of the painted object. Paint contains small synthetic flakes about one micrometer thick. These flakes are made of aluminum coated with magnesium fluoride such as glasses grown in semi-translusen chromium. Aluminum and chrome provide a vibrant metallic luminescence, while glass-like coatings act like refracting prisms, altering the surface color that appears when the observer moves.
ChromaFlair paints do not contain conventional absorbent pigments; more precisely, the pigment is a light interference pigment. The observed color is made entirely by the bias nature of the flakes, analogous to the rainbow color perception in the oil slicks.
ChromaFlair paints have also been used in place of optical variable inks in the use of United States currency forgery. Counterfeiter Art Williams stuffed a silver-green ChromaFlair paint onto a fake bill to replicate the color-changing ink on a $ 100 note issued in 1996.
ChromaFlair pigments are available in thousands of color variations. This is usually applied to items where visual appeal is important - such as motor vehicles, electric guitars and computer mods.
In addition to paint, it can be used as a coating, for example on synthetic polyurethane leather, or dispersed in resins for injection molding.
