In the United States, a Psychiatric mental health practitioner ( PMHNP ) is a leading practice nurse trained to provide various mental health services to patients and families in a variety of settings. PMHNP diagnose, perform therapy, and prescribe medications for patients with psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders or substance abuse problems. They are licensed to provide emergency psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessments of their patients, care plans, and manage patient care. They can also serve as consultants or as educators for families and staff. PMHNP has a focus on mental diagnosis, including differential diagnosis of medical disorders with psychiatric symptoms, and treatment medication for psychiatric disorders.
A PMHNP can often practice independently. In 27 countries, nursing practitioners (NPs) have been diagnosed and treated without the involvement of doctors, and in 19 countries prescribe drugs independently. This is different from 2008, when nurse practitioners can diagnose and treat independently in 23 states, and can only prescribe in 12 states. In other states, PMHNP has a collaborative agreement with a physician or a standardized practice scope signed by a physician. For the most part, in these countries, they still practice independently to diagnose disorders, provide therapy and prescribe medicines. Titles and functions vary by country, but usually NP , RNP , or ARNP are used.

Education
After completing a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a Psychiatrist of a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner takes two to five more years of training. First, the individual must obtain a four-year bachelor degree in nursing (BSN). Then, the candidate must complete a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) advanced nursing education program.
Individuals who already have a bachelor's degree in another field may attend one of the many accelerated BSN programs prior to entering an approved MSN or DNP program. Accelerated BSN programs usually take one and a half to two years after completing a prerequisite course. The new training modalities are Master entry entries/graduates to practice nursing program models, designed especially for those with non-nursing undergraduate degrees. Participants of these programs typically spend a year taking a graduate level nursing course to enable them to pass NCLEX-RN, and then instantly become additional 2 years of training along with a residency of at least 600 hours to complete the MSN degree. Students must then successfully pass the Board exams to practice as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP). PMHNP-BC is a designated degree for a certified Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
Effective 2015, a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) is an entry level planned for registered registered nursing practitioners. However, no country actually initiates the law on the DNP as a minimum degree. Currently, the 2015 date is just an objective filed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It is hoped that the nurses prepared by Master will now be "mastered" into the new system and as long as they maintain their current certification, they will not be required to continue further education unless continuing education is required.
There are many schools that offer the necessary postgraduate education for this profession. Leading schools with the Psychiatric Psychiatric Nurse practitioners program are Vanderbilt University Nursing School, Yale Nursing School, Saint Louis University, University of California-San Francisco, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University's Nursing School. A list of state PMHNP programs can be found online at the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA).
The cost of education can vary greatly. Programs in public universities are usually cheaper for citizens than outside the state. For example, at UCSF fees for Master's programs with tuition fees in the country of approximately $ 12,245 per year; for students who do not attend school, tuition is $ 24,798. In addition, programs at public universities tend to be cheaper than programs at private universities.
