The Lansing-East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area is a three-county metropolitan area located in Central Michigan set by the Office of Management and Budget, and includes Eaton, Clinton, and Ingham counties. The region is colloquially referred to as "Mid" or Central Michigan, and less often as "Greater Lansing". At the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 464,036. It ranks as Michigan's third largest metropolitan area behind metropolitan Detroit and Grand Rapids.
The metropolitan area was originally defined as including only the Ingham District in 1950, but the Eaton and Clinton region was added in 1960. Ionia County was added in 1973, but was taken a decade later for the 1990 Census.
The Lansing-East Lansing-Owosso Combined Area Statistics includes Lansing-East Lansing MSA, plus Owosso? SA, which includes Shiawassee County. At the 2010 census, CSA had a population of 534,684.
The Lansing Urban Area , as defined by the US Census Bureau, which measures the extent of the built environment, has a population of 313,532 at the 2010 census.

Demographics
At the 2010 census, there were 464,036 people, 183,442 households, and 112,131 families living within the MSA. The MSA's racial makeup is 81.6% White, 8.9% African American, 0.5% Native Americans, 3.8% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Island, 1.9% of other races, and 3.3 % of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race 3.9% of the population.
In the 2010 American Community Survey estimates, the average income for households in MSA is $ 47,731, and the average income for families is $ 60,602. The per capita income for MSA is $ 23,359. The foreign-born population in the region sits at 7.0%.
