Farmington is the city in St. Louis. Francois County is located 72 miles (116 km) southwest of St. John's. Louis in the Belt Lead region of Missouri in the United States. In the 2010 census, the population was 16,240. This is the county seat at St. Francois County. Farmington was founded in 1822 as a Murphy Settlement, named after William Murphy of Kentucky who first visited the site in 1798. William Murphy arrived on land west of the Mississippi River in 1798, when it was part of the Upper Louisiana Region and under Spanish rule.
