The West Marin Citizen is a weekly newspaper based in Point Reyes Station, California, which covers the western Marin County region. Following the pilot edition, this paper published its first edition on July 5, 2007. In subsequent years until April 2015, the newspaper engaged in a two-paper competition for limited readers and advertising dollars in rural areas where both are relatively scarce.
Joel Hack launched Citizen in reaction to the purchase of Point Reyes Light, a long-standing Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper and also based in Point Reyes Station, by Robert Plotkin. , which has a paper between 2005-2010. The ownership change, after the sale of $ 500,000 by old owner and editor Dave Mitchell, has caused different editorial tones and staff changes. Jim Kravets's former editor of Light is the newspaper's first editor.
Contributors include members of the local Latino Photography Project, whose work runs as an ongoing series called "La Vida". In August 2008, Citizens won six awards from the National Newspaper Association based on the report's first six months.
In mid-2008, a group of citizens formed a limited liability company with the intent to incorporate Light and Citizen to create a community-owned newspaper, but ultimately. this year, can not reach an agreement with Light '\ i> publisher at the proposed purchase price or conditions. This group, re-established as the Marin Media Alliance, focuses its efforts on community ownership only on Citizen . The effort did not work.
In October 2010, Hack retired as an editor and publisher, turning the paper over to advertising director Linda Petersen. Under his supervision, The Citizen is more inclined towards the features and sections contributed by the reader, while Light works on a more traditional newspaper model of reporters filling in the news. But the financial struggle affected both newspapers and left Peterson without the paid staff. In April 2015, she sold paper to Light for $ 50,000.
