truck stop , also known as transport cafe in the United Kingdom and as a travel center by major chains in the United States, is a commercial facility that provides refueling burn, rest (parking), and ready-made meals and other services to truck drivers and drivers. The stop truck is usually located on or near a busy road.

Smaller truck stops may only consist of parking areas, refueling stations, and perhaps restaurant restaurants. Larger truck stops may have department stores of various sizes, showers, small arcade videos, and TV/cinema (usually projectors with built-in DVD players only). The largest truck stop, like Iowa 80 (the largest in the world), may have several independent businesses operating under one roof, catering to a wide range of tourist needs, and may have several large and small fast food chains operating small food courts. Larger truck stops also tend to have full service maintenance facilities for heavy trucks, as well as vehicle washing services that can handle anything from passenger vehicles to large trucks. Some trucks stopped operating the motel or nearby. Most truck stops now offer a separate refueling area, often with a dedicated entrance, for standard-sized passenger vehicles. The truck's fueling area almost always offers double pumps, one on each side, so that large trucks can fill both tanks at once. (The second pump is called a "slave pump" or "satellite pump.")

Fuel islands in many truck stops can be very crowded. Most trucking companies have accounts with one or two stop truck chains and, having negotiated special prices for diesel, require their drivers to refuel exclusively at supported locations. Trucks stop near major cities, or on the east or west coasts, suffer the most traffic jams on their fuel islands.

Retail stores at large truck stops offer a large selection of 12-volt DC products, such as coffee makers, combo television units, toaster ovens, and frying pans that are primarily intended for truck drivers, who often spend long periods on the road. Such stores generally offer a wide selection of maps, road atlas, truck stops and exit guides, truck accessories (such as CB radio equipment and hazmat placards), plus entertainment media such as movies, video games, music and audiobooks. Increasingly, as interstate truckers have become a huge market for satellite radio, these retail stores also sell a variety of satellite radio receivers for both XM and Sirius as well as subscriptions to the service. Kiosks run by mobile phone providers are also common.

Most long-range tractors have beds, and many truck drivers keep their diesel engines running for heating or cooling for convenience. Because idle diesel engines make considerable noise (and are a source of pollution) they are often prohibited from such use near residential areas. Truck stops (along with public stops) are the main places where truckers can rest in peace, as required by regulation. Modern innovations, such as truck heaters and auxiliary power units, are becoming more common, and some truck stops now provide power, air conditioning, and communication via systems like IdleAir. Many truck stops have load board monitors for truckers to find real-time information about payloads, jobs, weather, and news. Most truck stop trains also have WLAN Internet access in their parking area. Idle reduction - reducing the amount of fuel consumed by truck fleets during idling - is a sustainable economic and environmental effort.

United States

The truck stop originated in the United States in the 1940s as a reliable source for diesel fuel that is generally not available at gas stations. This, coupled with the growth of the Interstate Highway System, leads to the creation of a professional freight and trucking stop industry. They generally consist of, at a minimum, diesel fueling stations with wide and high enough bays for modern tractor/trailer rigs, plus ample parking space to accommodate five to more than a hundred trucks and other heavy vehicles. Truck stops should not be confused with rest areas or motorway service areas that mostly serve cars and are often run by or rented from government or toll companies.

In the United States in the late 1990s, Truckstops of America (T/A) changed its name to TravelCenters of America to reflect this marketing strategy. There is no definite difference between the term "truck stop" and the new term "travel center", but some differences are size, proximity to interstate highways and major roads, number of services, accessibility for automotive travelers and RVs, and certain extra emphasis on appearance of the facility. Many truck stop chains like Flying J and T/A also serve the recreational vehicle market. All national chains have established customer loyalty programs to promote recurring patronage.

In Louisiana, truck stops that meet certain criteria are allowed to have a casino where it can operate up to fifty (50) video game poker games. These truck stops are arranged by the Louisiana Gaming Enforcement Division and must maintain certain facilities to be eligible to maintain the operation of this lucrative gaming device. Some of the necessary facilities are: owns a certain hectare of land, has 18-wheel parking spaces, has an on-site restaurant, and has truck, shower, telephone, television, weighing, laundry, fuel.

The stop truck is often depicted in films and novels as a rather seedy place, frequented by aggressive bikers, petty criminals, and prostitutes (eg "many lizards" in JT LeRoy's novels Sarah. This may be an outdated stereotype, as most modern truck stops are generally clean and safe, becoming "home away from home" for many truck drivers. However, most trucks stop reflecting the social environment in their area; consequently, occasionally find a slum truck stop in the slums. According to John McPhee's book Rarely Carrier , truck stops in rural areas is usually very safe and healthy. However, as distance to major cities reduces the incidence of prostitution, drug sales etc increases dramatically. Vince Lombardi's service area on the New Jersey Turnpike near New York City has the most rampant prostitution.

United Kingdom

In the UK the term "truck stop" is not commonly used and an equivalent stop is sometimes called a transport cafe. There are several areas on the freeway just for truck stop. The most famous resting places are named the service stations and are used by every type of motor vehicle.

In the streets (longer routes with lower speed limits, generally avoiding highways), truck stops may not have a refueling facility but only offer a place for weary drivers to rest and get food and drinks. They may not be well signposted, if at all.

Germany and Austria

In Germany and parts of Austria there is a more recent official development to the existing highway service stations. Often state-owned service stations on the highways are insufficient to handle the more trucks and stops that are necessary for truck drivers to rest. Since 2001, traffic regulations from Germany StraÃÆ'Ÿenverkehrsordnung include road signs, Autohof , literally car pages or car court .

Autohof is run by private companies, but the government provides road signs on the highway, indicating Autohof, if facilities:

  • no farther than the highway of one kilometer
  • can be approached by lori
  • provides at least 50 places for the lorry, or at least 100 on the more frequented streets, they should be separate from places for other cars
  • open 24 hours a day, all year to
  • offers petrol service 24 hours a day
  • offers meals from 11:00 to 22:00; other food in the rest of the day
  • including sanitation facilities for disabled people and for the exact needs of truckers

Corporateized

The truck stop economy has driven most of the small operations, after the war out of business and they have been replaced with large corporate chains or franchises. Truck drivers are a captive market, because the size of trucks and local regulations puts heavy restrictions on which truckers can park. Initial investment in land, permits, equipment, and maintenance needs is enormous and growing: therefore, several large truck chains begin to serve the wider public by combining the dismantling of trucks and traditional gas stations.
