service providers ( SP ) provide organizations with consulting, legal, real estate, communications, storage, processing. Although service providers may be an organizational sub-unit, usually a third party or an outsourced supplier, including telecommunications service providers (TSP), application service providers (ASP), storage service providers (SSPs), and internet service providers (ISPs)). The more traditional term is the service bureau (esp. 1960s to 1980s).
IT professionals sometimes differentiate between service providers by categorizing them as types I, II, or III. These three types of services are recognized by the IT industry although specifically determined by ITIL and the US Telecommunications Act of 1996.
- Type I: internal service provider

- Type III: external service provider
Type III SPs provides IT services to external customers and can further be referred to as external service providers (ESP) ranging from full IT/outsourcing organizations through managed services or MSP (managed service providers) to delivery of limited product features through ASP (application service providers ).
