History

Phase I Mall is dedicated in two stages. The first opened on October 4, 1990 with the wings of BrandSmart USA/Sears Outlet on the east end, extending past the Garden Food Court (next to Bealls, formerly the Hurricane Food Court), to the Books-A-Million store on the western end of them all. The second phase, dedicated November 15, 1990, expanded the mall westward from the Books-A-Million store, past the second food court, Market Food Court (next to the Sports Authority, formerly Food Court) to Marshalls/Spiegel Outlet (now Neiman Marcus Last Call Clearance Center) wings. Cobb Theater (became Regal Cinema 1997) built an 18-screen cinema located at the corner of Northeast mall, opened in December 1991. Greatland target was added to the East Wing mall, opened in March 1992. It expanded into a SuperTarget format store in mid-2006. Phar-Mor is another early anchor to the mall.

An additional Phase II, known as Veranda Main Street, opened Nov. 14, 1995. It runs parallel to the central mall corridor and contains T.J. Maxx, Merchandise Services and the first location of Last Call From Neiman Marcus. This section is currently anchored by T.J. Maxx (in the old Merchandise Service/American Signature Home space). This expansion was followed by The Oasis extension, opened April 15, 1999. It took the mall out of the nearby Burlington Coat Factory to Regal Cinemas (which expanded to 23 screens). The parking garage was added in 2002 just across from the outside entrance to the Burlington Coat Factory. Wannado City, an indoor amusement park with entrance fees, opened in 2004.

The Colonnade Outlet at Sawgrass Mills expansion was opened in 2006. It is an outdoor expansion featuring top-class brand outlets such as St. John, Burberry, Coach, Barney New York, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade and Tommy Bahama and restaurants like Grand Lux Cafe, PF Chang's China Bistro, Villagio and Zinburger. The Colonnade Outlets have expansions completed in 2009 and 2016 with the latest expansion featuring Tory Burch, John Varvartos, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Ted Baker, and the first Matchbox restaurant in Florida. The new parking garage opens next to Colonnade Outlets in 2016 to accommodate more mall visitors.

Initially, the concourses have names and each turn is considered a rotunda or court and is named for the style of the store it contains. The original concourse-mall concourses (walking from west to east) are Modern Main Street, Mediterranean Main Street, Art Deco Main Street and Caribbean Main Street. His courts (run west to east), Entertainment Court, Cabana Court, Video Court, Rotunda Court, and New Idea Court. This proves to be more difficult to keep in effect because the anchors and internal stores are changing. Then, enter the Mall named after the parking area, ie, Yellow Toucan, Green Frog, Purple Parrot, White Sea Horse, Red Snapper, Blue Dolphin, Young Flamingo, and New Ideas Court. In the mid-2000s, inspired by rival Dolphin Mall in Miami, this mall turned to the current "Road" section.

There is a children's animatronic show at the Cabana Court, between Books-A-Million and Rainforest Cafe, featuring flamingo and crocodile songs that welcome the public to Sawgrass Mills. It was set up like a swamp and allowed people to throw coins into shallow water donated to a local charity. It was then converted into a waiting area designed after the ship, still with a crocodile, and then to Cha Cha's current playground. The city of Wannado closed in 2011.

Local retailer L. Luria & amp; Sons is scheduled to open the anchor at Sawgrass Mills. A lawsuit occurred when the Merchandise Service showroom chain catalog was opened instead, as the Luria Company blamed Mills Corporation for choosing a Merchandise Service instead.

The expansion is scheduled to open in 2018 called "City Center at Sawgrass Mills" which will feature 25 full-price retailers, 4 new restaurants, and one new parking garage for 2,000 vehicles. The new expansion will be located next to the recently expanded Colonnade Outlet and will act as an extension to Colonnade Outlets.
