Histori
The association was founded in 1987 as the Independent Electrical Manufacturers Association , with initial remarks lobbying the UK Department of Energy to remove restrictions on private companies operating in the power industry. The idea for AIEP comes from David Andrews who is an engineer who promotes small-scale Combined Heat and Power - mini-CHP that is frustrated by the overt effort of CEGB later to manipulate the market against mini-CHP. He called the first meeting held at Orchard Partners in London, then also actively promoted CHP, with John Macadam of Orchard Partners and Martin Alder later from Wessex Water and Trevor Dooley of Electrical Reviews giving precious preliminary publicity. Early on Andrews suggested that the contact, David Porter, who owns a small desk publishing business providing newsletters - Porter later became Director and Chief Executive.
Electrical privatization
This initial goal, against CEGB, was achieved with the passage of the Electricity Law in 1989, and the subsequent full industrial privatization (with the exception of nuclear power).
In 1995, recognizing that little is left out of which the organization can be "independent", it changed its name to the Electrical Manufacturers Association. In 1999 moved to his current office in London. It used to be further based towards the Pall Mall at Waterloo Place.
